If the motor didn’t die yet, or die a hard death, you might not have to do any machining. I’m not crazy about how most are sold with “estimated mileage.” If you wanted to rebuild yours yourself I’ve seen DNJ rebuild kits (EK228M) for 640$ that include most of what you need, except a lot of the head components (cam gears, cam bearings, valve stem seals, valve springs). Swapping in a JDM as a long block can be tempting due to the price. So there’s another option for sourcing motors as long as you have your complete original to pull external parts off. Here are the casting codes you’re looking for:īlock Cast # K24A4, RAA (of course this block number applies to the USDM engine, but from my research the JDM should carry the same RAA secondary code) Crank Cast # R40 Cam Cast # PPA-PPA In-Line Head Cast # RAAįrom everything I’ve seen it looks like the A4 and A8 share all the long block components.

The search below has some engines worth viewing. is a useful source for salvaged parts, including the JDM engines. There are a few USDM K24A4s out there that aren’t super high mileage. Don’t take my word for it, you’d want to get eyes on it beforehand. Should- be easy enough to remedy by recycling parts off your old engine. I haven’t personally compared the two, but I believe the differences are in the intake design and/or EGR port usage. The Element was sold in Japan for a few years and used the similarly spec’d 158HP engine. That’s not to say that if you found a JDM of similar spec to the A4, that you couldn’t possibly drop it in with only minor modifications (or re-using a few external parts from your old engine). Some go so far as to warn you that if you are wanting to replace a non-JDM engine that you may only use the block. However, if you look at the descriptions you’ll notice that they are sure to label it as a K24A only, and that you are responsible for verifying fitment before purchase. If you’re shopping online for a “JDM K24A4 engine,” you will return some results with that title. Things to look for on the engine are the casting codes on the engine block, cylinder head, and crankshaft, the type of pistons and connecting rods it has (which you could generally infer from the cylinder head and crankshaft codes), the intake design, and whether it has EGR.
To tell which specification/version JDM you have, you’d have to look for certain key features (or look up the VIN from the plate that’s riveted on the back near the oil pan to tell what model and year vehicle it came out of, then look up the engine used in it). There were many versions of the engine used in Japan, and some similarly spec’d to the A4 (the use of the word engine refers to a complete engine, not just a block/cylinder head combo or long block). All Japanese K24As come stamped as “K24A,” and that’s it.

Based on the research I’ve done on the K24A series engines, there is no Japanese (JDM) “A4.” The A4 was an emissions friendly version of the K24A, which was not used in Japan.
